From the "Meet in Beijing Arts Festival" to the Strawberry Music Festival, there are festivals galore in the capital this month. But while these outdoor festivals and the pleasant weather are attractive, you might also want to consider some indoor options too. Julian Waghann has the latest from the 2014 NCPA May festival at the National center for the Performing Arts.
From the "Meet in Beijing Arts Festival" to the Strawberry Music Festival, there are festivals galore in the capital this month.
Clarinetist Sabine Meyer returns to the NCPA for the opening program of NCPA's 2014 May Festival. She was Berlin Philharmonic's first female member and popularized the clarinet as a solo concert instrument.
Poised and unexpected. The music of Mozart flowing from Sabine Meyer's clarinet is as much an odyssey as it is a discovery. This time she has teamed up with the NCPA's chief Conductor Lv Jia, the first Asian conductor to serve as director of a nationally-recognized opera company in Italy, ()and the first Chinese conductor to lead the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. For the maestro, Sabine Meyer is more than just a musician.
"Sabine's control of the tempo and each phrase of Mozart's music is unparalleled. But her brilliance goes beyond the technical feat. She's an artist in the literal sense of the word." Lyu Jia, Chief Conductor of NCPA said.
Meyer's performance is matched by that of violinist Ning Feng. Ning won first prize in the 2006 International Paganini competition and a number of prizes at the Hanover International competition.
He amazes the audience with his interpretation of Mozart's "Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major," while Sabine Meyer gives an effortless performance of Mozart's "Clarinet Concerto in A major." Entitled "Mostly Mozart," this opening program sets the tone for this year's May Festival, which which will feature works by the Austrian composer in more than half of the concerts.
"I used to play the piano when I was young, and I played a lot of his work. I think his music is very joyful."
"Mozart is the 'bible' of music. If you can understand and play his music well, then you can pretty much play anything."
This year's China NCPA May Festival will run until May 24th, and features 17 performances by international artists, from mozart to jazz, from piano to violin concerts. This year's festival will also be broadcast in a variety of public venues such as schools and subways.
