The death toll from a powerful earthquake in northern Afghanistan has risen to 283, with more than 1,000 others injured. The magnitude 7.5 quake struck the Hindu-kush mountainous area Monday afternoon. It also rattled Pakistan, India and Tajikistan.
The earthquake claimed 52 lives in Afghanistan, 228 in Pakistan and 3 in Indian-controlled Kashmir. It was felt as far as the Indian capital New Delhi and Kashgar in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
In the Afghan capital Kabul, electric power and communications were temporarily interrupted, and some buildings sustained damage. In neighboring Pakistan, the tremor caused mudslides and road damage in the northwest region.
