As a university student, I decided to learn German. For some reason I really liked the language, but I was not very good at learning it. The grammar 31 me a lot and even drove me crazy. My only advantage was 32 —I got an A+ on every word test I took. After two years of studies, I struggled (挣扎) to communicate in 33 German and signed up to study in Germany to complete my degree. It was the 34 term I would ever have.
The moment I arrived in Germany, I felt like I was starting from scratch (从头开始). The German I'd learned in university wasn't 35 for everyday conversation. My book knowledge fell by the wayside as I thought about the basics of getting around, reading emails and talking with my classmates. I was often nervous at school, worried about whether the teachers would call on me in class and whether I'd understand their questions. I only 36 a little around my eight roommates, who were willing to speak German slowly to me and didn't seem to mind my 37 .
I chose to study three courses—reading & writing, grammar and history. All were in German and difficult, but the history class was the worst. The teacher spoke so 38 that almost everything he said flew right over my head. I sat in the front, took notes and even recorded every single word he said in class, but 39 helped. I had no idea what the class was really about...
Years have passed, but I still remember how it felt to struggle so hard at 40 another language. That trip was a difficult but valuable lesson. I think my failure that term taught me just as much as my success.

答案解析:
31. C 根据后文“even drove me crazy(甚至让我抓狂)”可知,语法给“我”带来很多困扰,让“我”很头疼,所以选“troubled(困扰)”。“gave”意为“给”;“helped”意为“帮助”,均不符合语境。
32. B 根据后文“I got an A+ on every word test I took(我参加的每次单词测试都得A + )”可知,“我”唯一的优势是拼写,所以选“spelling(拼写)”。“listening”意为“听力”;“speaking”意为“口语”,均与单词测试得高分关联不大。
33. B 根据前文“but I was not very good at learning it(但我不是很擅长学它)”以及后文描述“我”在德国交流困难可知,“我”努力用不流利的德语交流,所以选“broken(不流利的)”。“perfect”意为“完美的”;“beautiful”意为“优美的”,均不符合“我”德语水平不太好的情况。
34. A 根据前文描述“我”德语不好,在德国交流困难等内容可知,这将是“我”经历过的最艰难的一个学期,所以选“hardest(最艰难的)”。“easiest”意为“最容易的”;“happiest”意为“最开心的”,均不符合语境。
35. C 根据后文“My book knowledge fell by the wayside as I thought about the basics of getting around, reading emails and talking with my classmates(当我想到出行、读电子邮件和与同学交谈的基本问题时,我的书本知识就被抛到一边了)”可知,“我”在大学学的德语对日常对话不实用,所以选“practical(实用的)”。“useless”意为“无用的”,程度过重;“meaningless”意为“无意义的”,不符合语境。
36. A 根据后文“who were willing to speak German slowly to me and didn't seem to mind...(他们愿意慢慢地和我说德语,而且似乎不介意……)”可知,在八个室友面前“我”感到放松,所以选“relaxed(放松的)”。“feared”意为“害怕”;“wondered”意为“想知道”,均不符合语境。
37. C 因为“我”德语不好,所以室友不介意“我”犯错,“make mistakes”表示“犯错”,所以选“mistakes(错误)”。“purposes”意为“目的”;“progress”意为“进步”,均不符合语境。
38. B 根据后文“almost everything he said flew right over my head(他说的几乎所有话我都听不懂)”可知,老师说得太快,所以选“quickly(快速地)”。“slowly”意为“慢慢地”;“clearly”意为“清楚地”,均不符语境。
39. A 根据前文描述“我”努力记笔记、录音但都没用,以及后文“I had no idea what the class was really about(我不知道这堂课到底在讲什么)”可知,这些努力都没有帮助,所以选“nothing(没有什么)”。“anything”意为“任何事物”,常用于否定句和疑问句;“everything”意为“每件事物”,均不符合语境。
40. C 根据前文内容可知,文章主要讲述“我”学习德语时努力挣扎的经历,所以选“learning(学习)”。“creating”意为“创造”;“teaching”意为“教学”,均不符合语境。
