Lugou Bridge, located 15 kilometers southwest of Tiananmen Square and spanning the Yongding River, is the oldest existing multi-arch stone bridge in Beijing. Initially constructed in 1192 and rebuilt in 1698, it is supported by 281 pillars, each topped with a stone lion. More lions are hidden on the heads, backs, bellies, or paws of these stone lions. These lifelike and diverse stone lions represent the finest examples of stone carving art on Lugou Bridge. With countless stone lions on the bridge, a saying in Beijing goes, "The stone lions on Lugou Bridge are too numerous to count."
Lugou Bridge is not only renowned for its aesthetic features but is also widely recognized as a milestone in the history of stone bridge architecture.
