Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) central Committee, on Thursday called for more anti-corruption efforts to "fundamentally improve the political ecosystem of the Party."
Xi, also Chinese president and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks at the second plenary session of the 19th Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) of the CPC.
"based on the thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, members should put into practice guiding principles from major policy addresses delivered at the 19th National Congress of the CPC and the Party shall exercise strict self-governance in every respect," Xi said.
Xi reiterated that Party members should uphold the absolute leadership of the CPC, and they should fully implement the political decisions of the CPC and stand by the Party's political principles.
"We cannot indulge ourselves in empty talk without working for the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics and national rejuvenation. We can neither afford to lose the grand vision because realizing Communism is a long process," Xi said.
In a high-profile press conference during the 19th CPC National Congress last Octorber, the CCDI presented the world with a shining list of its anti-corruption work.
Over 1.537 million officials have been punished for corruption and abuse of power. Of the 440 high-ranking officials taken down from provincial or higher level, 43 were members and alternate members of the CPC Central Committee, the CCDI said.
As of Oct. 31, 2017, the country’s top disciplinary authority said it investigated 193,168 cases of suspected austerity guideline violations and punished 162,594 officials.
