A magnitude-7.6 earthquake hit north of Honduras in the Caribbean Sea at a depth of 10 km on Wednesday, according to the United States Geological survey (USGS).
A tsunami alert was issued for US Caribbean territories Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, the Pacific Tsunami Warning center said.
The quake was detected 44 km east of Great Swan island at around 02:51 GMT with a magnitude of 7.8. The USGS later revised down the strength to 7.6.
The tremor was felt in the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
