Dongting Lake, located in the northeast of Hunan Province, is vast in area but shallow in depth. It serves as a flood storage basin for the Yangtze River. The size of the lake largely varies with the seasons. The provinces of Hubei and Hunan derive their names from their relative positions to the lake, with Hubei meaning "north of the lake" and Hunan meaning "south of the lake." As the birthplace of dragon boat racing, Dongting Lake enjoys a high reputation in Chinese culture. It is said that dragon boat racing originated on the eastern shore of Dongting Lake, aiming to search for the remains of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet of the Chu State. The dragon boat races, together with the scenic beauty of Dongting Lake and its surroundings, attract tens of thousands of tourists from across the country and around the world every year.
