The full name of a person of Han ethnicity in China consists of a family name and a given name. The characteristic of Chinese names is that the family name always comes first, followed by the given name. For thousands of years, the paternal family name has been passed down through generations. However, nowadays, it is not uncommon for children to take their mother's family name. Generally, a given name consists of one or two Chinese characters and often carries the parents' wishes for their child. From a child's name, one can infer what kind of person the parents hope the child will become or what kind of life they expect them to lead. Parents attach great importance to naming their children, as names tend to accompany them throughout their lives.
